Prevention and Intervention in Schools

Our schools are at work to prevent substance abuse among children.  The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) operates the Prevention and Intervention Services Program that places intervention specialists in schools.  They implement comprehensive student assistance programs that address problems associated with substance use and violence.

Age-appropriate prevention curricula, peer leadership or pledge programs and drug-free after school activities help to educate our youth about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

The program also helps youth to cope with the substance abuse of others, provides counseling and peer support groups and refers them to treatment providers if necessary.
