Congressman Jay Inslee
Raised on the shores of Puget Sound, Jay Inslee comes from a long line of Washingtonians and wants to protect the natural beauty of his state and nation for his three sons and generations to come.
As a father and conservationist, Jay has supported legislation aimed at addressing the public safety and environmental hazards posed by methamphetamine labs. In fact, he supported the House-passed Methamphetamine Remediation Research Act of 2005, and co-sponsored the Clean, Learn, Educate, Abolish, Neutralize, and Undermine Production (CLEAN-UP) of Methamphetamines Act.
As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, with jurisdiction over public health issues, and the bipartisan Congressional Caucus to Fight and Control Methamphetamine, Jay also has played an active role in the fight against methamphetamine production and abuse.
In particular, he’s worked to increase federal resources and support for the men and women who battle the scourge of methamphetamine every day – law-enforcement officials, public-health officers, community leaders and advocacy groups.
Jay backed the passage of the Children’s Health Act of 2000, which became law in October 2000. It helps combat the use and spread of methamphetamine by providing important new support for law enforcement, creating a Methamphetamine and Amphetamine Treatment Initiative at the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, funding additional research to treat addiction to methamphetamine, and establishing prevention grants to teach children about the dangers of such drugs.
Additionally, Jay has been a staunch advocate of our nation’s coordinated response to drug trafficking and efforts to raise public awareness of the dangers of methamphetamine. He fought cuts to our nation’s High-Intensity Drug Trafficking program and pushed to keep it housed within the Office of National Drug Control Policy; and, he actively supported the establishment of National Methamphetamine Prevention Week.
Jay served as representative for the 4th Congressional District from 1992-1994, and has represented the 1st Congressional District since 1999. Even before his election to the U.S. Congress, Jay was a public servant; he was a state legislator and prosecutor in Selah, Wash.
Jay holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Washington and earned his law degree from Willamette University. He’s been married to his high-school sweetheart, Trudi, since 1972. The couple has three grown children – Jack, Connor and Joe – who all live in Washington state.
