Methamphetamine Abuse in Maine

DEA Assessment:

  • There is a potential for methamphetamine to become a problem in Maine. Abuse and availability have increased in Aroostook County.
  • Trafficking groups supplying methamphetamine to the state generally are connected to outlaw motorcycle clubs or are members of "the rave set".1

Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):

5% of persons aged 12 or older reported using meth one or more times during their life.2
1% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
0.2% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):

5% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4

Drug Offenses:

0% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in Maine involved methamphetamine.5

Lab Incidents:

There were 4 lab incidents in 2006.6

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:

77 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
1% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7

State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:

Sales of nonexempt EPH, PSE and PPA products limited to 3 packages (3 gram limit per package) per transaction; Packages size of nonexempt EPH, PSE and PPA products are limited to 3 g, and must be in blister packaging with each blister containing no more than 2 average adult doses; Single dose packages containing no more than 60 mg may be kept within 30 feet and in direct line of sight of a staffed cash register or store counter or in a location that is locked or not otherwise accessible by customers.8
