Methamphetamine Abuse in MIssissippi
DEA Assessment:
- The manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine is one of the fastest growing drug problems in Mississippi. Virtually unheard of four years ago, or found only in the trucking community, methamphetamine is now approaching epidemic proportions in the state.
- The crystalline form of methamphetamine, known as "ice," "glass," or "crystal," is gaining popularity.1
Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):
3.7% of persons aged 12 or older reported using meth one or more times during their life.2
1.9% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
0.8% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3
Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):
7% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4
Drug Offenses:
12% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in Mississippi involved methamphetamine.5
Lab Incidents:
There were 132 lab incidents in 2006.6
Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:
464 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
6% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7
State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:
Sales limited to 2 packages or no more than 6 g of EPH or PSE in a single retail Transaction; No person may purchase more than 9 g within any 30-day period except if dispensed upon a valid prescription; Purchaser must display a photo ID to retailer at time of purchase, including purchases pursuant to a prescription. Single entity PSE and EPH tablets must be sold behind a counter where the public is not permitted or from in a locked display case where the customer must ask a store employee for assistance.8
