Methamphetamine Abuse in Nebraska

DEA Assessment:

  • Methamphetamine is the greatest drug threat to the state, and is available in almost every town and community.
  • The Omaha metropolitan area has seen an increase in the availability of crystal methamphetamine or "ice".1

Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):

6.3% of persons aged 12 or older reported using meth one or more times during their life.2
2.8% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
1.2% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):

5.8% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4

Drug Offenses:

67% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in Nebraska involved methamphetamine.5

Lab Incidents:

There were 29 lab incidents in 2006.6

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:

2,060 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
14% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7

State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:

No more than 1440 mg of PSE / PPA to be sold to or purchased by a customer per 24 hours, unless pursuant to a prescription or medical order; Package size limited to 1440 mg of PSE / PPA base for all dosage forms; Solid products must be sold in blister; No sales to persons under 18 years old; Purchaser must display valid driver's license or operator's license, a Nebraska state ID card, a military ID card, an alien registration card, or a passport.8
