County Efforts Against Meth Paying Off

The Polk County Sheriff's office has seized approximately 12 pounds of "ice" and dismantled four meth labs in the agency's continuing effort to battle local methamphetamine use.

Tougher legislation enacted in 2006 on the sale of certain household products used in the manufacturing of the drug have been a boost to policing efforts to control to the manufacture, distribute, and use of the drug, but even with attention through President George W. Bush's national education campaign, methamphetamine use remains a growing concern.

National Methamphetamine Day, which was first observed in 2006, will be observed Sunday in an effort to raise awareness at the local, state, and national levels about the dangers of the drug.

ìOn National Methamphetamine Awareness Day, we underscore the dangers of methamphetamine and reaffirm our collective responsibility to combat all forms of drug abuse,î President Bush said during the inaugural campaign against the drug.

Methamphetamine is manufactured using common household products and is a powerful stimulant that produces a more potent and longer lasting high than other drugs.
