Methamphetamine Abuse in Utah

DEA Assessment:

The dramatic reduction in locally produced methamphetamine has been accompanied by an increase in the availability of Mexican methamphetamine in Utah. The price of methamphetamine supplied by Mexican poly-drug trafficking organizations has increased in the last year. Several recent investigations revealed that traffickers were charging $1,100 per ounce of methamphetamine, as compared to as little as $650-$700 per ounce in late 2005.
Mexican poly-drug trafficking organizations dominate all facets of illegal narcotics distribution throughout Utah. Sources of supply for methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and marijuana are primarily located in Mexico, California, the Southwest and the Pacific Northwest. (1)

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students:

3.9% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life. (2)

Drug Offenses:

In 2006 there were 158 meth-related arrests; 75.2% of all drug offenses in UT. (1)

There was 0.0 kg of methamphetamine seized in 2010. (3)

Lab Incidents:

There were 3 lab incidents in 2010. (4)

There were 0 children endangered by meth labs in 2010. (5)

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse: (6)

2,453 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2010;

16.5% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.

Legislation:

A bill that would require landlords to conduct methamphetamine testing if they have a reasonable hunch their units have been contaminated met with fierce opposition from Utah's Realtor and apartment associations. (7)
