Methamphetamine Abuse in Montana

DEA Assessment:

Law enforcement officers across the state identify methamphetamine as the most significant drug problem in Montana.21 Quantitative data and the experience of state and local law enforcement agencies suggest that methamphetamine availability may be shifting. Meth-related seizures, arrests and clandestine labs are declining.

The majority of methamphetamine in Montana is trafficked by Mexican national groups. Additionally, numerous small-scale local laboratory operators produce moderate quantities of methamphetamine for personal use or local distribution. (1)

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students:

3.1% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life. (2)

Drug Offenses:

In 2007 there were 71 meth-related arrests; 68.9% of all drug cases in MT. (1)

There was 3.4 kg of methamphetamine seized in 2010. (3)

Lab Incidents:

There were 11 lab incidents in 2010. (4)

There were 5 children endangered by meth labs in 2010. (5)

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse: (6)

498 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2010;

6.5% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.
