Methamphetamine Abuse in Colorado

DEA Assessment:

Most of the methamphetamine available in Colorado originates in Mexico. For the first time in years, nearly all indicators of methamphetamine use have declined. (1)

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students:

3.5% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life. (2)

Drug Offenses:

In 2009 31.7% arrests were meth-related.

There were 66.7 kg of methamphetamine seized in 2010. (3)

Lab Incidents:

There were 15 lab incidents in 2010. (4)

There were 4 children endangered by meth labs in 2010. (5)

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse: (6)

4,950 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2009;

5.6% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.

SB 196

The bill removes ephedrine from the statutory list of schedule II controlled substances, repeals certain provisions concerning the unlawful possession and retail sale of methamphetamine precursor drugs, and adds ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine to the statutory list of schedule III controlled substances.

On April 21, 2011 the Colorado Senate rejected the bill. No other bill is pending. (8)
