Methamphetamine Abuse in Kansas

DEA Assessment:

Crystal methamphetamine, produced and trafficked by Mexican drug trafficking organizations, is predominant throughout Kansas. Imported Mexican methamphetamine is generally high in purity and relatively inexpensive. (1)

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students:

4.3% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life. (2)

Drug Offenses:

In 2007 there were 78 meth-related arrests; 32.9% of all drug cases in KS. (1)

There was 31.3 kg of methamphetamine seized in 2010. (3)

Lab Incidents:

There were 146 lab incidents in 2010. (4)

There were 8 children endangered by meth labs in 2010. (5)

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse: (6)

2,035 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2009;

10.8% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.

Section 1. K.S.A. 65-4109 is hereby amended to read as follows: 65- 4109. (a) The controlled substances listed in this section are included in schedule III and the number set forth opposite each drug or substance is the DEA controlled substances code which has been assigned to it. e) Any compound, mixture or preparation containing any detectable quantity of ephedrine, its salts or optical isomers, or salts of optical isomers. (f) Any compound, mixture or preparation containing any detectable quantity of pseudoephedrine, its salts or optical isomers, or salts of optical isomers. Both the house and senate versions failed to pass. However, according to the Associated Press the City of Parsons, Kansas, did pass a city ordinance that takes effect on June 1, 2011, making PSE prescription only similar to what jurisdictions in Missouri are doing.
