Methamphetamine Abuse in Texas
DEA Assessment:
Methamphetamine indicators have changed since 2005, with supplies down, prices increasing, and purity decreasing. Statewide, the purity of methamphetamine dropped from 56% in 2004 to 33% in 2008 because it is being cut with methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). Pure methamphetamine from Mexico, which typically sold for $18,000–$20,000/pound, sold for $18,500/pound when “cut” with MSM. (1)
Methamphetamine Use among High School Students:
3.7% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life. (2)
Drug Offenses:
In 2008 there were 554 meth-related arrests; 11.9% of all drug cases in TX. (1)
There was 762.3 kg of methamphetamine seized in 2010. (3)
Lab Incidents:
There were 108 lab incidents in 2010. (4)
There were 16 children endangered by meth labs in 2010. (5)
Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse: (6)
3,803 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2009;
8.3% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.
