Methamphetamine Abuse in Louisiana
DEA Assessment:
Methamphetamine continues to be a major drug threat in Louisiana and law enforcement reporting indicates that methamphetamine is replacing crack cocaine as the primary drug threat in some areas due to its availability, low cost and long lasting effects.
Methamphetamine production and distribution generates violent crimes and hazardous conditions. Independent Caucasian groups are the primary local producers and retail distributors of methamphetamine in Louisiana, although more African Americans are becoming involved in methamphetamine distribution. (1)
Methamphetamine Use among High School Students:
7.9% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life. (2)
Drug Offenses:
In 2008 there were 52 meth-related arrests; 14.9% of total all Drug Cases in LA.(1)
There was 21.4 kg of methamphetamine seized in 2010. (3)
Lab Incidents:
There were 107 lab incidents in 2010. (4)
There were 25 children endangered by meth labs in 2010. (5)
Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse: (6)
829 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2010;
3.2% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.
