Methamphetamine Abuse in Wisconsin

DEA Assessment:

Methamphetamine production and use are expanding from the neighboring states of Iowa and Minnesota into northwestern and southwestern Wisconsin.20 Much of the methamphetamine available in Wisconsin has come from Mexico, transported to Wisconsin from California and other Southwest Border states.

Three types of organizations are responsible for most of the transportation and wholesale distribution of drugs in Wisconsin: Mexican drug trafficking organizations that transport cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine; Nigerian criminal groups that distribute Southeast Asian heroin; and Dominican criminal groups that distribute cocaine and South American heroin. (1)

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students:

3.3% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life. (2)

Drug Offenses:

In 2006 there were 22 meth-related arrests; 9.4% of all drug cases in WI. (1)

There was 0.0 kg of methamphetamine seized in 2010. (3)

Lab Incidents:

There were 23 lab incidents in 2010. (4)

There were 3children endangered by meth labs in 2010. (5)

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse: (6)

289 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2009;

1.0% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.
