Methamphetamine Abuse in Virginia

DEA Assessment:

The Shenandoah Valley region contains the highest percentage of methamphetamine abusers in the state. Methamphetamine and “ice” have also become drugs of choice at raves and nightclubs.
Mexican trafficking organizations are making enormous inroads in the cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana distribution markets in nearly every part of the state. (1)

Drug Offenses:

In 2006 there were 145 meth-related arrests; 15.6% of all drug cases in VA. (1)

There was 1.6 kg of methamphetamine seized in 2010. (2)

Lab Incidents:

There were 106 lab incidents in 2010. (3)

There were 50 children endangered and 1 injured by meth labs in 2010. (4)

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse: (5)

298 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2009;

1.0% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.

Legislation:

SB 878

Adds pseudoephedrine to Schedule III of the Drug Control Act, which would prohibit it from being sold without a prescription.

That § 18.2-248.8 of the Code of Virginia is repealed. (This code is what mandates Virginia retailers to comply with the 2005 Combat Meth Act.)

On January 27, 2011, this bill passed the Senate Education and Health Committee. The bill has since failed and is now dead. (6)
