Methamphetamine Abuse in Ohio

DEA Assessment:

  • Methamphetamine manufacturing and use are increasing in the state of Ohio.
  • Local independent criminal groups, outlaw motorcycle gangs and, to a lesser extent, Mexican criminal groups are primarily responsible for shipping methamphetamine into and distributing it throughout Ohio.1

Methamphetamine Use among State Population (2002-2005):

3.5% reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.2
0.9% of young adults aged 18-25 reported past year methamphetamine use.
0.3% of persons aged 12 or older reported past year methamphetamine use.3

Methamphetamine Use among High School Students (2005):

7.5% of students reported using methamphetamine one or more times during their life.4

Drug Offenses:

4% of 2005 Federal Drug Cases in Ohio involved methamphetamine.5

Lab Incidents:

There were 210 lab incidents in 2006.6

Treatment Admissions for Methamphetamine Abuse:

612 treatment admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse in 2005;
1% of all drug abuse treatment admissions.7

State Laws Pertaining to Precursor Chemicals:

No retailer or terminal distributor or their employee may sell and no individual may purchase more than 9 grams of nonexempt PSE products in a 30 day consecutive period except upon prescription; No retailer or terminal distributor of dangerous drugs or their employee may sell nonexempt PSE products to anyone younger than 18 years of age unless the purchaser has a prescription for the products; Retailers, terminal distributors of dangerous drugs and their employees selling nonexempt products must check purchaser's government issued ID to ensure that they are at least 18 years old.8
